EXHIBITIONS    Kenthurst Galleries, Sense of Place

13.12.03 to 15.02.04

My current work is informed by the urban landscape of Middle Park where I have lived for over a decade.  I am interested in the unique rhythm of this area and the sociology of place.

The motifs of recent work, particularly of 197 Canterbury Road Middle Park, includes a block of apartments with wraparound balconies overlooking small single story houses.

David Hockney has painted a similar subject in 1967 “New Lawn”.  Howard Arkley has painted “OYO Flats” 1987 with three distinct balconies and patterned rhythm.  Flats have now been renamed “apartments” which suggests a new urban life style.

The economic machinery is at the heart of this affluent urban rhythm.

With this influence I pay homage to the sophisticated aesthetics of commercial design.  The work includes the stencilling of sign systems such as company logos (Mercedes, Holden, IBM, etc), which have been converted from advertising into something that is neither message nor external image.  Very small brush strokes, (pixel like) create the texture within a relatively large-scale painting.  Here, it is the urban notion of time, which interests me.  The camouflaged patterns have been created through a distinct use of colour.  This I have termed the fourth element, a colour theory which I have developed over the last couple of years and has a direct relationship to musical notes, in particular the music and rhythm of the Middle East, which I have studied for many years through dance.

Primary and complimentary colours are employed as an expressive element.  The repetitious brush strokes are piled on to create an integrated textural surface.

I approach the subject matter “Sense of Place” with the notion of integration and the connection made between the sociology of place and the economics of place.
