Cafe life in an abstract world
This shaped painting was inspired by a cafe in Victoria Avenue, Albert Park, that extended onto an intimate patio with huge pot plants and a singular tree in the corner.

This cafe was part of a building owned by the late Paul Cox, a renowned filmmaker and photographer.
The cafe's name, ‘Vincent’s Place, was taken from Cox’s documentary, ‘The Life and Death of Vincent Van Gogh. The menu boards outside always included a quote from Van Gogh.
Paul Cox passed away in 2016 (aged 76), and this property was sold in 2017.
I was privileged to meet Paul Cox and paint his portrait about forty years ago. The oil portrait painting remained part of his art collection, but I have no idea what happened to it after his death.
I have a record of this portrait on my website, ‘portraits’. A drawing of the portrait was exhibited at the Rovay in 2023.
This shaped painting has been coated with a very high-gloss resin (mirror-like surface) suggestive of the film screen and reflected light.
