Homage to Henri Matisse
From the Rovay wardrobe en route to my studio easel, my Romanian embroidered top relocated to the realm of the stretched canvas
This top was a gift from Romania (I have a Romanian family background), and like Matisse, I was enamoured by its beautiful feminine qualities.
Originally, the blouse was worn exclusively by peasant women, but towards the mid-19th Century, it became popular among the upper class as members of the Romanian Royal Family. Elisabeth of Romania and later Queen Marie and her daughters adapted the traditional blouses.
