The cocoon-like shape is a potent symbol and speaks to us on many different levels.A formidable transformation that will be revealed to us over time.
I was inspired by Velasquez’s painting, Rokeby Venus, the symbol of female beauty.
I have painted Venus as an embryo staring directly at the viewer from the mirror. A fetus that is well protected, safe and secure. Life is about to begin and be nurtured.
I painted this work a few months after the birth of my son in 1992 and exhibited it in Melbourne as part of a group exhibition.
